The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is recruiting for a land surveyor in Great Falls. This position is responsible for planning and performing professional survey work. Examples of duties include: organizing and overseeing straightforward survey projects, signing off on uncomplicated survey projects, analyzing evidence to determine boundary locations, staking/monumenting property boundaries, coordinating survey reviews to ensure quality, consistency, efficiency, and compliance with established standards and policies, making level survey calculations, carrying out complex drafting, providing training to field survey crews and coordinating the operation and maintenance of survey equipment within the Unit.

Surveyor I
- Typically, skills for this position are acquired through a combination of work experience and/or education. A preferred candidate would have work experience that would equate to an associate degree from correspondence courses or accredited college. Qualifying experience may include applied math and science, GIS, surveying or drafting, property title and easement documentation along with an aptitude for problem solving.
- No additional certifications, licensure, other credentials or experience is required.
Surveyor II
- Knowledge and skills are typically acquired through a combination of education and experience equivalent to an Associate or Bachelor's Degree in Land Surveying, Geomatics, or related field from an accredited college or university. Related degrees must include significant coursework in survey related math, drafting, and surveying techniques, principles, and practices.
- This position requires a minimum of two (2) years of survey experience.
- Certification, licensure, or other credentials include: Certification as a Land Surveyor Intern, Montana LSI per 37-67-326, MCA is preferred but other state LSI's are accepted, completion of the Bureau of Land Management Certified Federal Surveyor program or completion of the MDT LSI Surveyor Exam equivalent.
- Alternative qualifications include: Any combination of additional related work experience and education equivalent to the minimum qualifications.
Surveyor III
- The required knowledge and skills are typically acquired through a combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree in Land Surveying, Geomatics, or a related field from an accredited college or university. Related degrees must include significant coursework in survey related mathematics, drafting, and surveying techniques, principles, and practices.
- Two (2) years of progressively responsible professional land survey experience is required
- Registration as a Montana Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) is required. Please attach proof of license to application if applicable.
- Any combination of additional related work experience and education equivalent to the minimum qualifications.
Other combinations of education and experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

This position belongs to the MFPE bargaining unit. The successful candidate will receive more information about the union and the option to join the union during the onboarding process.
A valid Montana Driver's License is required. Driver's record will be verified. Successful applicants will be required to sign a release form which authorizes the Department to obtain the applicant's permanent driving records. Compliance with Mont. Admin.
